Background: The 1993 Alamo Bowl was the inaugural edition of the college football bowl game, featuring the California Golden Bears of the Pacific‑10 Conference and the Iowa Hawkeyes of the Big Ten Conference. It was part of the 1993–94 bowl schedule and played on New Year’s Eve at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

In the first Builders Square Alamo Bowl, Cal defeated Iowa 37–3 in front of 45,716 fans. Cal dominated early, reaching the red zone on their first three drives and taking a 9–0 lead with field goals from kicker Doug Brien. Quarterback Dave Barr added pressure with a 6‑yard touchdown pass to Mike Caldwell. Just before halftime, Cal’s Regan Upshaw hit Iowa quarterback Paul Burmeister, leading to a tipped pass that Jerrott Willard intercepted and returned 61 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 23–0. Iowa scored its only points in the third quarter with a 42‑yard field goal. Cal finished with 445 total yards compared to Iowa’s 90.
